Hi, I'm researching the Scottish fur trader Robert Dickson and his family. He is said to have married the daughter of Wekinyanduta (various spellings) also known in the fur trade as Tonnere Rouge or Red Thunder. To-to-win and Robert had a son William and at least one daughter, called Helen. I'd love to find record of the marriage, and any baptismal records, etc. for the kids. Thanks.

robert and totowin had 4 children: William,Helen, mary and thomas. I don't know if there is a marriage record for Robert to Totowin. they wed @ 1795 in the Lake Traverse area. there are baptismal Records listed for 3 of the children, in the Minnesota Genealogical Journal vol. 4 page 334. I couldn't find a baptismal record for William. the 3 children were baptized at Prairie du Chien.

Thanks! That's helpful. I do know that William worked with "Dad" in the fur trade, got involved in the '37 Metis rebellion, and is said to have committed suicide. There's family tree information in the old Tohill thesis available through Minn. Hist. Soc. But the baptism information will be helpful. Thanks again. Dick

hermin1, I have the Tohill document, which lists the descendants of Totowin and Robert D. as prepared by Alfred N. Coe in 1924, to wit: To-to-win is identified as Wahpetonwan; "Thomas, the oldest child, was accidentally killed at fort Union, North Dakota. He never married. "Helen, the second child, married Joseph R. Brown. Their only son died. She was later separated from Mr. Brown and married Moses Arconge, a French Canadian. Their son, Walter, married a niece of Strike-the-Ree, late chief of the Yankton Sioux. Two daughters of Walter, Victoria Simmons and Agnes Fredrick, reside with their families near Greenwood, South Dakota. His son Theodore has two daughters living." "... William, the third child, married a part-Ojibway woman in Minnesota. His daughter by this marriage married a La Fromboise, and two of their daughters married Blakes near St. Paul. "William then married a Yankton Sioux while engaged in the fur trade on the Missouri. His daughter by this marriage married William Bean and their children live on the Yankton reservation near Greenwood, South Dakota. "Mary, the youngest child, married Henry Ange, a part-blood of the Santee Sioux, nephew of Wabasha. Their children were: Victoria Brazeau, Harriet L. Ange, who was a cripple and died at the age of seventy, Mary Vanm Meter, Nicholas Ange, Josette Coe Renville, Thomas Ange, Helen Williams, and Matilda Lyman. All are dead but Matilda, who lives at Greenwood..."
I believe Harley Zephier told me he was related through the Ange branch. There's a little bit more in this tree, but that's the immediate family of the "founders". Louis Tohill identifies Totowin as being the sister of Red Thunder, "one of the important chiefs of the roving bands of Sioux east of the Missouri", and says the Dakota/Lakota name was "We-kin-wan-duta", possibly a chief of the "Cut-head band" of Yankton. I have emailed Minn. Hist. Soc. again for marriage and baptismal records. We'll see what they can copy and send. They've been helpful before. Thanks.

dick13cathy: I don't know if it is still in the church records section, but Fr. christian Hoecken's records(journal or diary)shows that he baptized Louisa Dickson/dixon, daughter of William Dickson. also thank you for the information from Cahill's tree, it confirms what ihad already found on my own. Louisa remarried after william Bean(Chief Blue Cloud) left her. she wed John Collins and they had a daughter Cora. John Had a daughter Julia by a Ponca woman . Julia married Samuel Wolfe of Santee Indian Res. in NE.

Hi All,
Just happened on this site as I was looking for documentation on an article I'm writing. You may want to check records of Old Fort Madison (1808-13), Iowa. Tradition has it that one of Robert Dickson's infant children died there during a visit by him and is buried in an unknown location near site of the fort. Possible contacts are site manager c/o city hall (Eugene Watkins, Ph.D., or Nick Colbert, a researcher, of Fort Madison who lives in 1300 block of Avenue C. Both are familiar with day books kept by the fort commanders. Reference to the event may be included there as Dickson was a friend of Captain Stark (who came under criticism for associating with a man of British origin). I have come across this information several times. It may be mentioned in a lengthy article re Dickson done for North (or South?) Dakota Historical Journal. and I believe is also mentioned in an article in The Palimpsest (Iowa Historical Society mag.) back in the '20s or 30's. I don't have my research materials with me, but if you will send me an e-mail I will check when I get home from traveling to see if i can narrow field. kinglear4950@ya...... I am not likely to visit this site again. Hope this helps. Dave

Just an update. I got some material through the contacts mentioned for Fort Madison, Iowa, and the reference there is to a female child of the British fur trader (spelled "Dixon" in the correspondence), but no age or name given. Also got the baptismal records from Minn. Hist. Soc. with a couple of the children, but not much else so far. This is helpful, however.

dick13cathy: Father Hoecken baptized william dickson's daughter Louisa. Jimmy has posted the records of Father Hoecken I think elsewhere in this section. Early Baptisms at Prairie Duchien 1817(correction: Prairie du Chien's earliest church Records,1817)lists the following Dickson/Dixon children baptized: Helene Dikson eight and a half yrs. May 2,1817. Marie dikson-3 Yrsand 2 mos. old date- see Helene. Thomas dikson four and a half yrs old. Reference: Minn. Geneal. Journal. 4:p.334 Addendum; The baptisms were performed by Fr. Dunand,a Catholic Missionary priest. dickcathy13< I believe that Cora was deaf.
